Principal investigator(s): H. Anker (University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands), E.V. Oppenhuis (University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands)
Fieldwork organization: The Netherlands Central Bureau of Statistics (Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek CBS)
Design: This study was administered in two waves. The first wave of interviews was conducted before the election in the period from March 5 till April 22, 1994. The second wave of interviews started on May 9 (six days after the election) and continued through June 30, 1994. The 1994-1998 panel study was designed as a three wave panel study. The first two waves were conducted in 1984, before and after the 1994 election. The third and final wave of interviews was held in 1998.
Fieldwork dates: The fieldwork (main study) was done before the election, from March 5 till April 22 and after the election date from May 9 till June 30, 1994. The election date was May 3rd, 1994. The fieldwork of the panel study was done in 1998.
Sampling frame: For this study a two-stage sample was drawn. First a sample of 4.000 households was drawn from the Geographic Base Register – which is based to a large extent on the national mail delivery register of the Netherlands. It is an address register maintained by CBS. Second, from all citizens eligible to vote on May 3rd within each household, one person was randomly selected by interviewing the person whose birthday was first. The minimum number of addresses to be sampled for each municipality had been set at sixteen. Because sometimes more than one household belongs to the same address (each household to a maximum of three was included in the sample), the number of households in the sample had been 4.042. Because of not inhabited addresses and foreigners, the gross sample turned into 3.816. The original sample for the 1994-1998 panel study is identical to the sample drawn for the ‘regular’ 1994 Dutch Parliamentary Election Study.
Response: The response in the first wave was 47.5 percent, 1.812 respondents of the gross sample of 3.816 completed the interview. 1.527 respondents completed the interview in the second wave, which means that there was a response rate of 84 percent of the first wave. For the third wave of interviews (in the panel study) the response was 55.7 percent, so 850 respondents of the respondents in wave 2 (1.527) completed the interview.
Panel study: This election study did include a panel study. This study consisted of three waves. The first wave was held before the 1994 election, the second after the 1994 election and the third wave was held after the 1998 election. The study period of this panel study began in 1994 and ended in 1998.
